A landscape installed between the back of house and the entry to a back house. The site came with industrial gabion walls and a bunch of mature xeric specimens including; Agave, Spineless Pricley Pear and Retama. The homeowners wanted to address the access to the back house for their tenants. Our plan did just that. We custom fabricated the lower and upper steps and constructed an adjoining dry-stack retaining wall. Nothing fancy about the pathway materials limestone, bricks and CMUs mostly reclaimed or repurposed
from the site. Their reorganization into linear collages reflect the hard lines and angles of the steel steps and give the space a more contemporary aesthetic which lends itself to the style of back house.
In terms of plants, we started by removing some of the more problematic Agave and Cactus. We left some that were well positioned to serve as anchors and focal points. Our planting goal was to create enough privacy were the backhouse occupant felt like they had their own space without going for total seclusion. Low-growing perennial textures and flowers provide interest along the approach. Bamboo Muhly provides a great contrast to the Agave and Cactus, softens the rock-heavy material selection and creates the walls in the fun outdoor corridor entry to back house.
A fun project to with a modern edge but still exudes lots of rustic charm.
